Mishap and Blunder

Like many Filipinos, I was both enraged and grieved by how the recent hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand was handled. I was personally affected by the mishap not only because the whole world watched how untrained and ill-prepared were our Police force to handle the situation but also because I feel for the victims as well as for the thousands of Filipinos who are now working in China, Singapore, Taiwan and Hongkong and in many places in the world where there are Chinese. Many of them must have watched the sensationalised drama on TV while in their offices and surrounded by their colleagues or sitting beside their bosses. I could just imagine how unnerving the situation must be. I feel the same way because I teach Chinese online.

Here is a letter of apology written by one Filipino. This letter captures many of our sentiments.
A letter of apology from a Filipino teenager.

After reading the blog, I couldn't help but wonder what my students also feel about the tragedy. Do they also feel the same sense of accountability for the incident? Do they still take pride in their heritage despite our shortcomings as a people? Will they strive to better themselves so that when their generation will take their turn to lead this country they would know better what to do?

I wonder what your thoughts are.

I pause for a reply.

  3. Hello Ma'am I wonder if whose to blame with the incident is it Mendoza, our police force, or the media. I think our police force don't know how to handle situations like that. I'm so worried about my relatives working abroad they told me that the hostage incident really changed a lot their situation there. I just hope this will end soon and everything will be normal again. Take care ma'am and God Bless.

  4. The incident was really an awful one. I can't help thinking about it. What made me more shocked was the super slow actions of the police officers. Most of the Filipino people today, I guess are discouraged also. But do you wonder why such horrible things happened? It's because God has prepared something for us that we never imagined. Something wonderful in the future. We must be positive especially in moments of blunders. And most of all, the harder the challenges, the more God loves you...

  6. I don't have any idea how to bring back our dignity as Filipinos.Let us think positive that the hongkong and china nationals will not judge us as a whole and should not put their blame to our beloved OFW's who are sacrificing abroad for their families here in the Philippines.

  8. Anyone who is open-minded enough will take an accountability and share their sentiments, even tough they are not Filipinos. We, as a human being, are still far from perfection let alone the person overwhelmed by his lower nature. We must let incident be a wake-up call for us to see what really happening to our world, what its diseases and what would be the appropriate remedies.

  16. I read the letter and I can't deny, the person that wrote it was truly a Filipino. As for accountability, we may take our part and let me quote you on this "Will they strive to better themselves so that when their generation will take their turn to lead this country they would know better what to do?".

Everyday is everyone's generation and turn to lead this country. We start small and keep our goals. One small step. This would sound really like a cliché, but we can all start in things we can do now as citizens or students - respect, understanding, forgiveness, education I can name a few more but I don't think this would end as a comment but I'm sure my fellow students can continue. This is the future. We start today.
